According to the scientific archaeological excavations, humanity’s achievement through education begins in East Africa sometimes two and half million years ago by the Paleolithic, also known as the “Old Stone Age or Hunter-Gatherers” in historical perspective. During this era human beings had manufactured among other things, a range of stone or bone implements such as knives, borers, spear, bows and arrows. Since then, in confronting the many challenges that the future holds in store, homo-sapiens sees in education an indispensable asset in its attempt to attain the ideals of peace, freedom and social justice. However, although education is not a miracle cure or a magic formula opening the door to a world in which all ideals will be attained; it’s undoubtedly an available method to foster a deeper and more harmonious form of human development and thereby to reduce poverty, disease, exclusion, ignorance, oppression and war.
After millenniums of progression, today education sets the social strata (classification) in which the 6,840,507,000 people of the world population are categorized as (a) developed nation, referring to that allows all its citizens to enjoy a free and healthy life in a safe environment, (b) developing nation, a poor nation but willing to become more advanced socially and economically, and (c) under developed nation, which is an idle-minded nation that is extremely poor with high birthrates, and economically dependent on the advanced countries.
In other words, availability of education and high literacy rate of a nation represents its contribution in the stability, the unity, and the development of a country. The number of literate and educated people helps in building a nation and subsequently creating a society in which to live better than illiterate one, because an educated society understands the complexity of all matters and comes up with the solutions of the problems instead of creating new ones.
To further draw a line between the advantage and disadvantages of education, let us look into the 307 million people of the United States population whose heterogeneous society has an overall illiteracy rate of about 1% and thereby living together in harmony with a decent life. In contrast, the homogeneous society of Somalia is 9.8 million people with illiteracy rate of about 78%. As a result of this high rate of illiteracy, the Somali people even with the help of the international community, found uneasy to reinstate the nation they had unfortunately ruined into ashes 20-years ago same as a wildfire can destroy a forest. This is of course an ideal picture of how education overwhelms illiteracy!
In conclusion, as I outlined earlier, starting from the Old Stone Age era on, universal education has been seen as a major tool for all aspects of life (solving differences, improving life standard, combating disease etcetera) and its more important now than ever in today’s world. I therefore, urge my fellow Somali youth, their parents, and the society as a whole to set a better foundation for future generations, in educating themselves and their children, so as to overcome the unprecedented tribal divisions and the shameful uproar that we’re in for decades.
