It has been a day of shock and trauma for Somalis worldwide after the foreign minister Abdulahi Omar appealed to the UN Security Council to send foreign troops in to Somalia, a move that would mean any peace in Somalia will fade automaticallyThe residents of Mogadishu and other main town have reacted angrily flooding the airwaves of local FM stations, they say “all hopes of peace have now faded and we strongly condemn this with contempt”, and some of them were even announcing war.
The elders of the capital’s dominant clan, Hawiye, the organisation of Somali Islamic clerics, the delegation from world Islamic scholars who are in the country for mediation, as well as the organisation of poetries have all denounced this and strongly made their point by saying “this will fuel the tension and will cause more havoc and fighting”, one elder went as far as saying “they fight against any foreign troops as long as a single teenage girl is a live”.
Many were caught surprise by this move; they told the media “this is unbelievable and outrageous”.
The Islamic resistance groups has yet to announce their position, something analyses says its strategy of waiting the people’s response to what is obviously wrong before they can raise their voice. Now the outspoken are those who were support base of the government
This new development flies in the face of widespread appeal by all Somalis to have AMISOM withdrew its troops from Somalia, something now become a day dream as the government is on a mission to have thousand of the other foreign troops in Somalia, increase AMISOM to its original agreed number of 8000, and have the armies embargo removed.
Within hours the popularity of the new president Sharif Sheik Ahmed has significantly shrunk, making red faced and disgrace.
